As regarding the 2d solids, we briefly present some important issues related to the optimal EFEM quadrilaterals, such as: the design of the completely stress-locking-free EFEM quadrilateral, the stress-hybrid EFEM quadrilateral, the effective implementation of either coupled (in the sense of the fracture modes) or uncoupled rigid-inelastic traction-separation softening cohesive laws for the discontinuity, the design of an efficient tracking algorithm for propagation of a single discontinuity (or several non-overlapping discontinuities) across the 2d finite element mesh, and the design of robust solution method that does not rely on a discontinuity tracking algorithm. The  motivation behind the work on those issues is an aim to optimize the EFEM quadrilateral (and related tracking algorithm) so that it could become a really robust, reliable and easy to use numerical tool for performing complete failure computations of 2d solids, which is presently still not the case. As regarding the planar frames, we briefly summarize the pluses and minuses of our recently designed EFEM planar beam finite elements that can be used for the complete failure analysis of steel and reinforced concrete frames.
