000012772 520__ $$2eng$$aThe development of a design code of practice for concrete Liquid Retaining Structures (LRS) in South African is currently in the draft phase, along with the revision of the code of practice for reinforced concrete structures in line with Eurocode. This paper discusses part of the research undertaken in the development of this proposed South African structural design code. A previous reliability investigation of the EN1992-1-1 (2004) crack model for load-induced cracking applied to structures such as LRS where serviceability cracking is the dominant limit state showed that model uncertainty is an influential parameter in the model, particularly for small crack widths. This paper discusses further research done towards defining and quantifying reliability model uncertainty, and determining the best crack model based on EN1992 for eventual use in the design of South African LRS. Critical evaluation and comparison between experimental and calculated results using accepted statistical methods is performed to quantify model uncertainty parameters to a higher degree than currently known. Issues which require further investigation in quantifying model uncertainty were identified.
