000012852 520__ $$2eng$$aThe objective of this work is to demonstrate the use of multi-scale areal curvature tensor analysis to study surfaces created by conventional subtractive methods, and their interactions during contact with spherical probe. Areal, multi-scale curvature analysis has been recently developed to better understand surface topographies, how they are manufactured and how they behave. Curvatures on a surface can be indicative of the topographically dependent behavior of a surface and curvatures are, in turn, influenced by the processing and use of the surface. Curvatures are an important aspect of surface topographies that have not been well characterized. Curvature has been used for calculations in contact and fatigue mechanics, and for the evaluation of cutting edges. Machined and grinded parts are measured, using a scanning laser confocal microscope. The same measurement techniques is applied for commercially available CMM ruby probe. Plots of principal curvatures as a function of position and scale are presented in the paper. In addition, a dedicated test stand has been designed and built to measure the deformations and friction coefficient during contact between the aforementioned sets of samples and the probe. Statistical measures are introduced to show the interaction at particular scale between curvature and contact deformations, as well as between curvature and friction coefficient. Strong correlations between mean and standard deviation of maximal principal curvature and average friction coefficient were found.
