Stochastic sensitivity analysis: an essential tool for optimal design of dynamical systems under uncertain loading

Abstract eng:
First, the role of stochastic sensitivity analysis in the optimal design of dynamical systems under uncertain excitation is examined. Stochastic optimization problems formulated in terms of response statistics are considered in this study. It is shown that stochastic sensitivity analysis is an essential tool for solving single and multi-objective stochastic optimization problems. Next, the importance of stochastic sensitivity analysis in post-evaluation calculations is addressed. These calculations permit to determine how sensitive optimal designs are to changes in the various model parameters and preliminary assumptions. For multi-objective optimization problems the sensitivity analysis allows to evaluate the variation in some objectives given the variation in another objectives on the Pareto surface. Such information is used for decision making and tradeoff analysis. A frame structure with friction devices under earthquake loading is presented as an illustrative example.
