3D FE analysis of bridged crack growing from the chevron notch of 3-point bending specimen

Abstract eng:
The contribution deals with the 3D analysis of the chevron notched three point bending specimen which is used to determine the fracture toughness of brittle matrix composites reinforced by particles or fibres. In ceramics reinforced by ductile particles or elastic fibres a crack bridging mainly cause the toughening. This mechanism increases in some extent behind the crack tip along the process zone wake and, as a consequence, the crack growth resistance rises as the crack propagates and leaves the wake. An exact method of fracture behaviour quantification is needed when further development of particle (fibre)-brittle matrix composites and assessment of their possible operational degradation is to be made. An integral part of this quantification is a detailed numerical analysis of the specimen containing a bridged crack.
