FRACTURE ENERGY OF QUASI-BRITTLE MATERIALS: VARIANTS OF ITS EXPRESSION AND DETERMINATION, AND RELATED EFFECTS

Abstract eng:
This paper is focused on fracture energy which belongs to the basic fracture-mechanical characteristics of quasi-brittle materials. This parameter is explored here from the point of view of two most frequently used non-linear approaches to modelling of quasi-brittle fracture – cohesive crack models and equivalent elastic crack models. Different expressions of energy dissipated during the fracture process, i.e. work of fracture and specific fracture energy, are investigated. The paper deals also with the influence of specimen size and testing geometry on the value of mentioned fracture characteristics. The research is conducted by means of numerical simulations of three-point bending of notched beams with several specimen sizes. The simulations or fracture tests are performed by using ATENA FEM software.
