000018194 520__ $$2eng$$aSerious damages caused by recent strong earthquakes such as Christchurch, Nepal, Tohoku, Chile and Italy have taught human society that life safety is no longer the only index measuring the seismic safety of building structures, and attention must also focus on the resilience of buildings from the view point of quick recovery of living environment and preservation of the personal and public properties. In addition, as many countries in the world are continuing their development of major infrastructure systems such as long span bridges, hospitals, and roads, there is increasing recognition of the importance of the resilience and reliability of these systems in order to ensure their life-cycle performance and sustainability of mega- systems. Therefore the term ‘resilience’ has quickly become important in both academia and in practice, so nowadays is widely promoted as a promising concept to deal with shocks and uncertainties in the face of environmental, social and economic crises. Developing resilient communities to natural disasters has been recently promoted and addressed in many national laws and policies in different countries. As results, a variety of community-based activities for disaster risk mitigation and management, such as promoting public awareness and participation in earthquake risk reduction programs from local to national levels have been prepared and implemented to develop resilient communities. Therefore the invited lecture wants to give a global overview of the recent developments of the resilience programs in the world, summarizing the considerations of the 1st International Workshop on Resilience organized in Turin on September 20-22, 2016, gathering international experts from all over the world. The paper provides a broad overview of the latest developments in Disaster Resilience, starting from the first pioneer work done in the field of Earthquake Engineering at MCEER Center. The history of disaster resilience is reviewed by surveying the accomplishments of the last 10 years in this new civil engineering discipline, clarifying our perception of likely future developments and the new emerging trends on Resilience research are envisioned as challenges for the next years.
