IMPORTANCE OF MAINTENANCE FOR SUSTAINABLE CONCRETE STRUCTURES

Many structures are being built in various parts of the world. To make the existing structures more sustainable and to utilize these structures for longer period of time, maintenance is one of the most important works. Usually, concrete structures can be used for more than hundred years, but due to deterioration, accidents, etc., some of the structures must be repaired within 50 years. This paper clarifies the present situation in Japan related to maintenance of existing concrete structures. Some examples are shown how to prevent the deterioration and how to deal with the problems after they are deteriorated.
