THERMOGRAVIMETRIC ANALYSIS OF CARBON DIOXIDE ABSORPTION BY FIELD-CRUSHED CONCRETE RUBBLE

Abstract eng:
Carbon dioxide absorbed in crushed concrete was weighed by thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis. Samples of crushed concrete were collected from 46 recycling plants located in 45 prefectures in Japan. Each sample was analyzed both with and without air exposure simulating typical product storage at recycling plants. The amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by recycling 1 ton of crushed concrete was estimated as 9 kg using the difference between the two measurements for each sample. Based on this result and national survey data, we estimate that concrete recycling in Japan absorbs ≥200,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year.
