To activate of those materials, sodium hydroxide was used into the mortar by 5% of their weight. Setting time and consistency of pastes were determined. Mortars were tested for flow, flexure and compressive strength, strength activity index, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared, porosity, water absorption, and thermal resistance. The results revealed that slag shows best binding property compared to FA and POFA. Mortars containing slag and OPC exhibited 34.20 and 38.78MPa compressive strength at 28days, respectively; durability properties also found considerable. Therefore, it can be concluded that, with the presence of sodium hydroxide, slag can be used as cement substitute.
