The physical properties and chemical composition of IFA were examined and the mechanical performance of ECC incorporating incineration fly ash was reported. The results showed that IFA is not a conventional pozzolan according to ASTM C-618. However, certain chemical reaction occurred when IFA is used together with the cement since the compressive strength of IFA-ECC can be retained when 20% of cement was replaced with IFA. At higher replacement level of IFA to cement, the strength of IFA-ECC reduces while the tensile ductility enhances with the increase of incineration fly ash. Leaching tests conducted on the IFA-ECCs showed that almost all heavy metals concentration compiled with the limit set in U.S. EPA drinking water standards. Preliminary evaluation indicates that incineration fly ash may substitute cement in the production of ECC.
