SUSTAINABLE CEMENT-BASED MATERIALS: A BIOMIMETIC APPROACH
Abstract eng: BIOMINERALIZATION IN CEMENT-BASED MATERIALS MIGHT BE THE INITIAL STEP TOWARDS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A “NATURAL” CONCRETE.THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS STUDY IS TO INVESTIGATE THE ROLE THAT BIOMINERALIZATION CAN HAVE ON PROPERTIES OF CEMENTBASED MATERIALS, PARTICULARLY CEMENT-BASED COMPOSITES IN WHICH PORTLAND CEMENT IS REPLACED WITH PRE-CONSUMER RECYCLED MATERIALS. THE RESULTS SHOW A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH WHEN BACTERIA (BACILLUS PASTEURII) WERE ADDED.
