It is an environmentally-friendly and cost-efficient water repellent with promising features for designing repair mortars. The aim of the present research is to study two linseed oil treatments on lime-metakaolin mortar: application of a protection layer onto the surface of the specimens and mixing the oil in the mortar bulk. Characterization of specimens was performed after four months of curing: carbonation and hydraulic reactions were evaluated by thermal analysis, flexural and compressive strength were assessed by conventional mechanical tests and hydric characteristics were studied by mercury intrusion porosimetry, water absorption by capillarity and water vapour permeability. Specimens were subjected to sodium sulphate resistance test and the degradation action was monitored by water absorption methods: microdrop absorption time and water absorption by capillarity. Improved durability of lime-metakaolin mortars with linseed oil has been confirmed and the mortar enriched with linseed oil in the bulk achieved the most promising results. The designed mortar seems to be particularly suitable for application as repair render in building areas subjected to severe weathering by water.
