REPAIR OF THE I-65 EXPRESSWAY BRIDGES USING CFRP COMPOSITES

Abstract eng:
This paper details the retrofit of the interstate I-65 Expressway in Jefferson County, Kentucky using carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) fabric. Three different types of retrofits were carried out: (1) repair and strengthening of cracked precast prestressed concrete (PC) girders, (2) the repair and retrofit of damaged reinforced concrete pedestals, and (3) the repair of a damaged reinforced concrete pier column. The precast PC girders were wrapped with CFRP fabric at the cracked locations to prevent or limit excessive displacements in both the vertical and horizontal directions. The bearing pedestals as well as the pier column have been repaired and wrapped with CFRP fabric to increase their capacity. Instrumentation and remote monitoring of the PC girders made it possible to reduce the cost of the repair by using a more economical repair scheme.
