Usually the materials are tested in laboratory conditions, which are quite different from the condition where the real structures harden. In this work we present the changes in the durability properties, chloride ingress, and water uptake by capillary suction, of commercial cements that include ground granulated blastfurnace slag, or fly ash. The properties have been studied after hardening in environments of controlled temperature and relative humidity. To check the relation of these results, also some corrosion rate measurements have been made in reinforced samples. The results have been compared with the results obtained for an ordinary portland cement. The behavior of the cements that include the active additions improves in most cases the behavior of the portland cement, both in durability properties, and corrosion rate, and suggests that this cements that contribute to the sustainability of the construction industry have equal or better properties in the studied cases than the ordinary portland cement.
