FLY ASH-LIMESTONE SYNERGY IN TRIPLE CEMENT

Abstract eng:
Due to incentives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions during clinker production more and more of the clinker fraction of cement is being replaced with supplementary cementitious materials or fillers such as fly ash or limestone powder. In a previous study it has been observed that replacing clinker with a combination of fly ash and limestone powder rather than with either one of them leads to an increase in compressive strength when maintaining the clinker replacement level or an increase in the replacement level of the clinker when maintaining the strength level. In this study this synergetic effect between fly ash and limestone powder is demonstrated with a range of different clinkers and fly ashes. The results of the current study indicate that for class F fly ash, the strength increase resulting from the synergetic effect between fly ash and limestone powder at constant clinker replacement level increases with increasing aluminate content in the glass phase of the fly ash.
