This experimental program consisted of evaluating the mechanical and durability performance of various mix designs. Several standard hardened property tests were selected to evaluate the performance of the HVFA mixes in comparison to conventional concrete, including compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, and splitting-tensile strength. These tests were also used to determine their validity in predicting the performance of HVFA concrete. Specimens were also fabricated in order to evaluate the durability performance of HVFA concrete. The tests performed on the mixes consisted of freeze-thaw resistance, chloride penetration by electrical indication, and scaling resistance. Both the conventional and HVFA mixes were subjected to these durability tests in order to compare their performance. The experimental results were compared to various code provisions including the American Concrete Institute 318 empirical relationships. This paper presents the results of how the HVFAC mixes compared to a conventional mix design both in terms of mechanical properties and durability performance.
