SUSTAINABLE REHABILITATION OF THE PRINCESS MARGARET BRIDGE

Abstract eng:
This paper describes the sustainable aspects for a major bridge rehabilitation through an innovative structural system. To meet this challenge, the design team has selected a system of precast prestressed high performance concrete deck panels that are composite with the steel trusses. The strategy for extending the service life of the bridge was achieved through the use of high performance materials and innovative design that translate to a less construction time and energy spent on future maintenance. The paper highlights also the development of a novel composite system that has the potential to be highly sustainable due to a lower amount of structural steel strengthening.
