Study of lime mortars specimens for the Coimbra’s historic centre coatings restoration

Abstract eng:
To make a sustainable restoration of a historical centre it is necessary to understand, among other things, the materials used in the coatings of the buildings. In this work the study is applied to the case of the historic centre of Coimbra, in the central region of Portugal. The studied buildings show the presence of coverings that date back to the 18th century. From the knowledge of the materials identified in lime coatings and paints, we present in this work proposals of the application of materials currently on the market such as lime putty and pigments, compatible with the structures of masonry that support the greater part of the buildings in the historic centre of Coimbra. Specimens made with lime putty, sand and pigments, mixed or in paint, are studied with respect to their properties, such as the colour changing through time and the multiple layers adhesive resistance when subjected to climatic conditions, simulated in a xenon test chamber. The study of degradation of the applied colours is also one of the objectives of this study in progress, in particular of whites, yellow/ochre, red and ultramarine blue, typical colours of this city.
