Lime mortar for renders finishing techniques and properties

Abstract eng:
The aim of this work was to try to answer the basic question: are the different looking renders surface aspects related to differences in the behaviour of the render layer, in particular with respect to water, both in the liquid and the vapour state? The answer is: it is not possible to recognize a significant relationship between working technique and clearly discriminating microstructural features. All of them are characterized by the presence of a thin layer of small calcite crystals. Some techniques: involving levelling, flattening, smoothing or floating, have as a result the compaction of the surface, reducing the presence of micro porosity in the area near the surface. A certain influence of the working technique can be observed by the samples were the surface has been smoothed or rubbed off in which, the water absorption coefficient shows lower values, lower absorption velocity. No significant differences can be observed regarding the factor of resistance to water vapour diffusion.
