This study attempts to establish a relationship between the microstructure and the macro- level behavioural phenomena of historic lime mortar, and its compatibility to the stonework host. The studied samples were obtained within the Glasgow area, selected from structures exposed to a progressively aggressive environment; examples of good condition are compared to examples of failed mortars within the same control environment. The findings consider the consequent effects across the diverse characteristics of the mortar. An in-depth examination, covering a wide range of the interlinked characteristics, is afforded of the microstructure by examining the samples using Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry, and qualitatively verifying by means of Scanning Electron Microscopy. Results yield pore size distribution and their interconnectivity, which together can be analysed to gauge against the behaviours & performance on the larger scale.
