Historic mortars in thin sections - Concept for a petrographic atlas with CD

Abstract eng:
The concept of an atlas with comparative images taking from thin sections of different historic mortars is being presented. The different components, the structural characteristics and possible damage patterns of historic mortars are to be discussed. The focus is on typical and characteristic examples for each topic in plain polarized as well as in cross polarized light and in various magnifications. The presentation of each topic is consistent and arranged on one page. For a better observation, all images are issued also on a CD which will be enclosed. Flanking information such as origin of the sample, results of the chemicalmineralogical mortar analysis (if available) and literature references are listed for each example. The atlas addresses scientists and students, who deal with the examination of historic mortars with regard to the statement of inventory and condition or to the definition of possible restoration mortars. Key words: Historic mortars, mortar analysis, thin sections, light microscopy
