In the project, experts on the values, methodology and conservation of historic building materials, particularly lime-based mortars, plaster, and renders share their experience and knowledge with people who are working with their own hands to protect historic buildings or who are simply interested in architecture and building history. The project is an unusual and attractive way to develop links between understanding historic building materials, philosophies of conservation, and practical, especially traditional conservation work on authentic buildings. The project also entails popular guided tours of real medieval castles, focusing on historic building materials values, methods of investigation and conservation, and also opportunities to try out conservation practices on lime mortars, renders and plasters (for example, preparing traditional lime mortar or limewatering consolidation). The article discusses the experience of implementing these innovative forms of popular education transfers between professional conservationists and the general public. This approach to the transfer of knowledge from laboratories and reading rooms into practice requires a completely new dimension for scientific work.
