Restoration of “Fornace Bianchi” lime production plant in Cogoleto (Italy)

Abstract eng:
Fornace Bianchi in Cogoleto: an XIX century infrastructure in a town that has produced and exported lime since the Middle Ages. The lime industry was the most important business in Cogoleto, near Genoa, since XVIII century. For this reason the restoration of this furnace building became a part of a larger project on the restoration of the urban identity of this town. The restoration project (2009 – 2011) went through three phases: an initial consolidation of the upper part, the discovery and restoration of the lower part and a final phase where tools were added to facilitate the furnace’s usage. Later on a non profit association was established to manage the monument usage, with the aim of routine inspection and maintenance of the building, promotion, understanding and dissemination of the culture of lime and performing research activities in the area of industrial archaeology.
