Effects of accelerated maturation in repair dolomitic lime based mortars

Abstract eng:
Aging of lime putty improves the quality of hydrated lime due to changes in portlandite microstructure as regards the morphology and particle size. Improvements in mortar properties such as: workability, plasticity, water retention and mechanical resistance, are achieved in lime based mortars. The accelerated maturation technique is to increase the traditional process temperature to 60 ° C (constant), so that the improvements mentioned above are achieved in a shorter period of time. Thus, from the control of the microstructure of dolomitic lime through accelerated maturation, this study evaluates these effects when this material is used in restoration mortars. Two types of dolomitic lime are tested: dry hydrate, and slaked lime putty, the recommended material for restoration interventions. The limes were aged in temperature of 60 ° C for 14 days. Tests were conducted in non-aged lime mortars for comparison. Tests and analysis are performed using Powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD), followed by mechanical characterization according to Brazilian standards. XRD analysis shows an increase in intensity and narrowing of portlandite diffraction peaks in both aged limes, especially in accelerated ). Furthermore, a stronger increase on mortars plasticity is obtained with limes matured at 60 ° C than that observed in those matured at room temperature. This process seems to improve the mechanical characteristics of the mortar. Thus, the use of aged dolomitic lime putty appears as a possibility in the field of restoration of historical buildings.
