C19th cement based artificial stone at Swiss Garden, Bedfordshire Mortar Techniques and Materials used to Imitate Stone


Abstract eng:
Swiss Garden, Old Warden, Bedfordshire, has samples of 1830’s Austin Artificial stone and 1870’s Pulhamite Artificial rockwork which have recently been surveyed. The paper examines the use of mortars and mortar techniques which have been used to imitate stone and rockwork. Techniques include the selection of binders, careful selection of aggregates, the addition of pigments, and the careful application of mortars.
