The Late Norse ‘coral’ or mearl-limes of Orkney – an on-site mortar archaeology of Cubbie Roo’s castle and chapel.
Abstract eng: . This short paper presents evidence from a recent survey of lime bonded buildings in Orkney which suggests that coralline algae, or ‘mearl’, was burnt to produce building lime in the earliest documented medieval stone and lime castle in modern day Scotland, and its associated chapel.
