A comparison of the two was reported in Prague in 2010 (Thorn 2010) and the current paper reports on the status of the grout after four years of development. Lithium silicate offers superior binding strength for siliceous rocks and this is equally true when used in a lime based system. Water miscibility allows lithium to be combined with lime based systems without detriment and its compatibility with calcium hydroxide has been demonstrated. Buffering with acids eliminates the stain but most acidic by-products of the buffering have high solubility. Phosphoric acid produces lithium phosphates that have very low solubility and can be considered a stable mineral in the suite of products formed by the interaction of lithium silicate with calcium based systems. The staining issue appears to have been specific to the product supplied by PQ Corporation but has not been seen in any of the results uinsg Wollner products. This paper outlines the chemistry of lithium interactions together with case studies of application methods. Systems that require lime compatibility or are inherently high in moisture benefit from this approach.
