Sustainable conservation: transforming conceptual dualism in harmony for the safeguard of historic cities in developing countries

Abstract eng:
The purpose of this article is to address sustainability within the context of conservation in Latin American countries. There exists a certain conceptual dualism between conservation and sustainable development, which pervades questions, such as: (i) How can we continue to maintain material integrity and at the same time adapt our cultural heritage to the demands of development and modernization?; (ii) How can we promote social participation in a way that governments and citizens can define actions to reach sustainable contexts?; and (iii) How can we, in ensuring that the management process is shared and interactive, elaborate and implement more effective preservation policies? This paper is set on the context of World Heritage (WH) sites located in Northeastern Brazil, more specifically on the historical center of São Luís. The Historic Centre Management Council is briefly presented as a practical example of how shared management can promote the union of efforts and synergies in favor of sustainable development.
