The peri-urban landscape of Pompeii. Conflicts and synergies

Abstract eng:
In the surrounding of Pompeii ancient city, there is a considerable number of disused industrial buildings to turn into new uses. The paper is about the peri-urban landscape of ancient Pompeii, understood as a "landscape of the limit", a place where conflicts between public, private and social interests could be solved through shared action of active protection. The re-evolution of landscape, comprehended as reuse of pre-existing and protection of landscape through bottom-up actions, performs several functions: it improves a new development, with the localization of new activities, and promotes the active protection of landscape by local communities, encouraging the perception of landscape as common good and, consequently, its maintenance. To achieve this, the paper proposes the framework of a multiscale tool to support planning, design and management in reuse actions, according to HUL approach by UNESCO.
