Cultural landscapes in the urban fringes: the case of villa Scassi of Genoa (Italy)

Abstract eng:
The paper presents a part of cultural landscape of Genoa. The landscape was completely transformed between 16th and 17th centuries in the countryside ‘villeggiatura’. The new type of villa is represented by the Villa Imperiale Scassi. In the 19th and 20th century it was transformed in a school, part of the garden in public green space and in a hospital, many ornamental elements disappeared, the complex water system was altered, and, about 1930, an street divided the villa and the garden which were surrounded between 1960 and 1970 by tall buildings altering the perception of the space. The work developed with the student of the master course in Landscape Architecture concerned the master plan which has taken in consideration the historic rural landscape. The priory of the restoration project is the recreation of connections between villa and garden, today not perceived as a whole.
