Abstract eng:
The rehabilitation and preservation of the watermills of rivers Alferreira and Barrocas, is part of a plan promoted by the Municipality of Gavião in order to preserve a wide range of cultural and natural heritage. The plan embraces various levels of intervention, looking for understanding the natural, economic and socio - cultural aspects of the territory, in order to set several principles to intervene in the various watermills settlements that characterize the human occupation along the two water streams. The planning actions evidence the different aspects of the idea of sustainable development, in order to preserve and promote environmental values related to the flora and fauna species, rehabilitate and preserve cultural values related with the buildings and the memory of the flour milling activities, creating new opportunities for economic development on the basis of traditional activities. Ultimately it will allow regaining social values related to participatory action of the villagers. The diversification of uses allows promoting different activities within the overall plan, including activities such as tracking, sightseeing, observation of flora and fauna, as also research and leisure activities. The sustainability approach, thus embraces cultural promotion of both natural and cultural territories, promoting specific actions in order to create a sustainable standard for future actions.
