Global urban study of Ávila, a World Heritage site

Abstract eng:
For many years the official bodies have been working to promote sustainability policies for cultural heritage. These rigid policies are coming into conflict with the everyday life of the inhabitants of those cities, causing gradual depopulation and other problems. How could we protect The Urban Heritage without implying that the city become a "museum city? Is the model of "ghost town" what we want for our Heritage? It seems clear that the future of Heritage cities (and the contemporary city in generall) involves a sustainable urban development. The Urban Observatory of Ávila (an independent agency) proposes a working methodology used in the city of Ávila (declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985), which may be useful for the sustainable development of other Heritage cities. This methodology starts from the overall strategic assessment of the city through a system of specific indicators for Heritage cities based on five dimensions of the cityscape. A further processing of the information and data is performed by the orthogonal projection through a diagram that maps the relationships between the forces and build a new urban reality becoming a tool that enables to turn our Heritage environment into an unlimited resource for present and future generations. From the Urban Observatory of Ávila we raised the challenge to systematize a methodology that allowed us to develop a comprehensive study of urban heritage cities whose main objective was to serve improve their environmental policies, urban and regional sustainability.
