Cultural identity of urban areas between the square of Santa Bárbara and the Paseo de Recoletos in Madrid

Abstract eng:
The old Madrid was, as often said, a “convent city" due to its large number of religious foundations, their size and the footprint that monasteries and convents have left in its urban image. From the 19th century, though many religious establishments started to disappeared and being transformed by means of confiscation laws, social secularization and the modernization of political institutions; it is still possible to have a reading of the print left by those architectures. Several convents were demolished, but their urban trace remained and public squares and gardens occupied their space, following the hygienic trends of the time. In this paper, the evolution of a neuralgic well-established area, between “Convento de Santa Bárbara” and “Salesas Reales”, has been analyzed, by means of historic cartography (overlaying the most representative plans from the 17th century to the present). It reflects its spatial evolution from its origins to the present representative series of linked public spaces.
