Architectural heritage and migration

Migrations of ethnic groups frequently lead to distinct settlements and the erection of communal buildings, among them places of worship, which become symbols of cultural identity in a strange land. The architectural production by Ukrainians, who migrated to Canada in three rather distinct phases, offers a valuable case study of how a particular identity has been expressed, e.g., in the initial small rural structures, the subsequent urban churches with features borrowed from historical styles, and recent innovative design work, respectively. The aim of the last was to create an architecture, which would respect the Eastern liturgy and relate to the rich Ukrainian architectural tradition, but which also would be a fitting contribution to its urban setting, embrace new technology, and convincingly express the cultural needs and aspirations of a modern society. Its examination shows how an architectural heritage can be meaningfully enriched in the context of a new place and a new era.
