000002459 520__ $$2eng$$aThe increasing number of legal actions brought against the State and of disputes between local governments and ordinary citizens in which ignorance of cultural heritage legislation is clearly apparent poses the question of whether this reflects the inadequate training of the lawyers, architects and other professionals who are involved in these cases, or is evidence that individuals are trying to take advantage of the failures in the system to further their own ends. To answer this question the contents of academic programs were examined in order to determine the presence of cultural heritage issues in the curriculum. Graduation statistics for the last decade were also examined to ascertain how many students had finished their studies with knowledge of cultural heritage. The research results indicated that in Colombia, cultural heritage is not a cross-cutting part of the curriculum taught on professional and technical programs. Concrete action therefore needs to be taken to rectify this situation if sustainable development is to be achieved.
