Yet these links are very real, and can, depending on the circumstances, be highly useful to both fields. In particular, historic buildings demonstrate that it is possible to build beautiful and durable buildings of local, natural, and fully recyclable materials, inventively using features of their landscape settings to take advantage of natural light, ventilation, and heat accumulation. Historic buildings can demonstrate that it is possible and in many respects desirable to maintain and repair old things. In other words, that it is possible to act in keeping with sustainable development. Linking these areas requires good ideas and historic buildings, and their environment can immediately become classrooms for teaching not only the history of building and craftsmanship, but also sustainable development.
