Monitoring and conditions assessment of built heritage: an introduction to MONDIS mobile application

Abstract eng:
Cultural heritage represents a complex domain characterized by a multidisciplinary understanding of its documentation, monitoring and protection. An interesting and innovative approach to historic buildings preservation and assessment of structures decay is provided by the application of modern semantic web technologies. These offer an important contribution to artificial data processing and can positively affect pursuing the main scopes of heritage conservation. This paper introduces a research focused on the development of a mobile application for built heritage assessment called MONDIS mobile. The MONDIS mobile application 'runs' on an ontological model which formalizes the representation of the built heritage domain. The interaction between model and application is based on the processing by means of a generic inference engine which takes ontological knowledge, it deduces new knowledge and finally it provides the information back to the application user. The new inferred knowledge helps the application user to reveal new dependencies in the domain, or in other words to obtain coherent answers to the queries posed by the application itself. The goal of MONDIS mobile application is to assist professionals in assessing in-situ the conditions of a building by exploiting the automatic reasoning support provided by the formalized ontological model. The application allows: to identify the object with GPS, to survey the damage by allowing to capture pictures and to store measurements directly in-situ, to assess building conditions by evaluation of different parameters, to synchronize with server for further processing of data through additional web-based applications, for the sake of searching possible remedies. Such tool proves to be valid also for education purposes, endorsing retrieval of sustainable solutions and compatible decisions. Case studies of built heritage monitoring and conditions assessment are also presented.
