Evolution of the building to let in Lisbon, reuse and maintenance

Abstract eng:
For centuries the city territorial management defined legal, economic and aesthetical rules that determined the internal and external images of the building to let. The 20th century authorship project will determine the fundaments for individual creativity concerning building façades. This evolution correlates with types resulting from the civil, environmental and constructive contexts. Its definition is fundamental to establish guidelines for the preservation and rehabilitation of these buildings and to guarantee their correct adaptive reuse and maintenance, essential to a sustainable development. The building’s authenticity must be preserved. From 1500 to 1930s different models of building to let emerged. Their analysis showed aspects of continuity and rupture, supported by new data and by the discovery of historical sites Postigo do Melo-Casas do Embaixador and Pombal Quarter. These aspects allow us to re-establish the gaioleiro’s era. From this study emerges a list of elements defining a specific identity to be preserved.
