Refunctioning civil architecture samples with the art function “Izmir Samples”

The concept of protecting historical buildings emerged because historical buildings carry the architectural, historical, cultural, social, artistic and aesthetic values which they have. The concept of protection goes far back and exists in our day as well. Cultural properties are structures worth protecting for various reasons like because they reflect the life style of the previous civilization and societies, they hold information on the structural system and manufacturing material for their period and they help conservation of the urban memory. Essentially, the primary functions of the structures shall be preserved. However, in the cases where it becomes impossible to carry the structures into the future together with their primary functions, a new function is given to historical buildings for maintaining their continuity.The function to be given is providing new areas of utilization suitable for the locational and structural characteristics of the building. Thus, we may provide historical buildings start to take part in urban life again. Regarding the building to be refunctioned, it is necessary that special care should be given for protecting the authentic architectural, structural system, social and cultural values of the building and its ambient conditions should be taken into consideration. In this study, within the context of refunctioning historical buildings, refunctioning of individual mansion samples within the Urban Protected Area in Izmir historical commercial center Punta (Alsancak) district with the art function and their conversion to Mask Museum and Joy & Caricature Museum. Within the scope of the study, the formation and development process of Izmir Alsancak (Punta) district, and the typology (authentic setup) of Levantine mansions in Alsancak Urban Protected Area shall be analyzed, and next, the refunctioning of these mansions in our day and their conversion to boutique museums shall be examined and finally these samples which are developed for carrying civilian architecture samples to the future shall be discussed. 1 INTRODUCTION Over the course of history, considering the formation and development of the Punta Region, 1zmir has been an important trade center of Anatolia since the 17th century, owing to its geographical location. Intension of commercial activities, coupled with the immigration from Greece and the Islands and also the population growth due to local migrants from Anatolia have increased the demand of housing. In the following period, along with the increased commercial volume; tradesmen, investors and travelers all around the world from diverse ethnic and social origins have arrived in the city in the 19th century. Even though the foreigners were given the right of private property possession with the declaration of “Tanzimat” reforms in 1839, Ottoman Empire had before handed this right with some restrictions for certain communities when required. Levantine community has acquired concessions due to their role in increasing trade.
