Built in the thirteenth century by the congregation of Humiliati Monks has survived till present time through different uses and reuses. After decades of underutilization the fortuitous encounter between the current ownership of the abbey, the Ospedale Maggiore of Milan, and the Priory of St. Norbert has set the stage for the return of a monastic community within the walls of the abbey. Return the monastery to the use for which it was designed represents the best way to ensure its preservation, reinserting the complex within the category of "living architectures” and a way to adapt its structures to the needs of our times. The reuse project strategy of this case study we are presenting follows two basic principles: maximize the respect for the existing structures and minimize intervention operations on historical masonry.
