The renovation of the heliotherapy colony of Cremona and the riverside of the Modern: an itinerary towards the future

Abstract eng:
Cremona is a town founded on the left bank of the Po River, near the middle of the Po Valley, about 80 miles from Milan. In the Thirties were built the masonry seats of the rowing clubs Baldesio and Bissolati, followed by the heliotherapy colony “Colonie del Po". So it was born the “Modern riverside” along the towpath: three rationalist buildings in close relationship with the natural environment and the social life. Still today the riverside is the destination for walking or cycling in every season, as well as a meeting place for members of the private rowing clubs. In this context the former colony and its park - owned by the Municipality of Cremona - are the only public space available to the community and if well equipped can be attractive for a national and international cycle tourism. In fact the colony is located along the route that is part of the cycle path VENTO (Venice -Turin) designed by the Department DASTU of the Politecnico di Milano. So this building is at the same the touristic potential time and the weak point of the riverside. It requires an urgent restoration because is representative of the rich, various and forgotten architectural heritage of the colonies built in the Thirties in Italy, often abandoned or destroyed. Recently indeed it has documented by the photographer Dan Dubowitz for his exhibition “Fascismo abbandonato” that has shown at the British School in Rome (2010).
