Torres Bermejas: a project for tourism and culture. The value of authenticity

Abstract eng:
The area of Torres Bermejas or the Crimson Towers was originally part of a castle, Hizn Mawror, in the Alhambra, located on the eastern wall of the new city, next to the neighbourhood of the same name. As the city spread eastward during the Almoravid period, it eventually stood inside the city. It was built as early as the IX century, although it underwent successive renovations during the Nasrid period, as well as throughout the XVI and XX centuries. The restoration project aims to promote the Crimson Towers for the purposes of culture and tourism, opening up the building so that people may visit and enjoy it, as well as including it in the sightseeing tours around the Alhambra, providing it in the immediate future with a small multi-purpose exhibition room to cater for cultural activities. Indeed, in the conception of the project very limited intervention is proposed for such a significant building in the history of architecture, and with such outstanding documentary value as the Torres Bermejas complex. It consists of intervening through conservation, making history's traces on the edifice legible, without deleting anything that has been essential in its transformations, while eliminating the things that in our view undermine the core values of authenticity. Our intervention shares the modern vision of critical conserving restoration, “directed towards conserving the monument for the future, promoting understanding without eradiciating the traces left by the passage of time; we feel the utmost respect for ancient materials and for authentic documentary value, always acting in accordance with critical interpretation.”
