Heritage landscapes, tourism and sustainable development. Heritage value and touristic exploitation of vineyard cultural landscapes in the Basque Country (Spain)

Abstract eng:
This paper starts out with a preliminary conceptual reflection on the existing interactions between landscape, heritage, tourism and sustainable development, specifically focusing on vineyard landscapes. After which, the wine landscapes within the Basque Country are analyzed including, among others, the following aspects: its physical surface and the contrasted territorial distribution between the Atlantic and Mediterranean bioclimatic area, its significance and cultural value, plus the diversity affecting the heritage process ranging from highly regarded landscapes, such as that corresponding to Denomination of Origin Rioja, to others of equally high value but which enjoy mainly local and regional recognition (as is the case of txakoli wines). Lastly, the impact of wine related tourism or enotourism is evaluated in the said region and its relation to the revaluation of heritage and with the rural development strategies and initiatives. All of this will enable the previous conceptual reflections to be validated, refined or challenged.
