New AR technology application for interpretation in the monumental heritage site: “The Lonja”

Abstract eng:
This paper presents a research project with Augmented Reality (AR) at the architectural site, the Lonja de los Mercaderes in Valencia (Spain), declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. The project aims to increase accessibility to the site and providing users, in this case, visitors to the place, with intuitive experience of this technology and a new interpretation resource. Augmented Reality was chosen to enhance the dynamic experience of this place by providing elements that can be visualised and directly manipulated by users in the real environment of the building itself without the need for any excessively invasive equipment in this historical and artistic context. The designed system is an interpretation tool to explore the interior of this monument, stimulating active perception and providing an equal opportunity for all people to participate and understand some of the amazing elements of this site. The results of the experiences carried out “in situ” validate Augmented Reality (AR) as a tool to increase the accessibility to the contents of this monumental setting and promote a new form of communication for this site as well as a renewed image of the monument.
