Irish medieval mortars: implications for the formulation of new replacement mortars

Abstract eng:
This paper provides an overview of medieval lime mortars in Ireland, based on comparison of the petrography and microstructure of 110 lime mortars from 35 archaeological sites in the Republic of Ireland. These comprise bedding, plastering and rendering mortars from a range of secular and ecclesiastical buildings including castles, churches, round towers and city walls. The paper outlines current gaps in knowledge of Irish historic mortars, and the challenges in using the data gained from analyses to specify repair and replacement mortars.
