Several aerial and hydraulic lime-based mortars were tested. Prismatic specimens and mortars applied as brick render were used for the characterisation of the mortars. A comparative analysis of the “in situ” results and compressive strength is performed and the relationship between porosity and ultrasound velocity is analysed. A satisfactory relationship between the porosity and ultrasound velocity values was found and this indicates the possibility of estimating porosity from ultrasound velocity. The good relationship between compressive strength, ultrasound velocity and rebound values emphasizes the potential of the “in situ” test methods for mechanical characterization of mortars.
