000004552 520__ $$2eng$$aAccording to failure mechanism of man girder on plane gates, three failure modes, namely, bending failure, shear failure, and combination of bending and shear failure, are considered. The performance functions are established for the three failure modes. The adaptive importance sampling method is adopted to calculate the system reliability of main girder with correlated failure modes, which is also compared with lower and upper bounds method. The results indicate that the adaptive importance sampling method can account for the correlation between failure modes, which can evaluate the system reliability of main girder effectively. If the correlations between different failure modes are not taken into account, the system reliability level of main girders will be underestimated. The system reliability levels of main girder designed using the current design code are 3.0 and 2.3 for safety level I and II crest gates, and III crest gates, respectively. They are 3.0 and 2.1 for safety level I and II submersible gates, and III submersible gates, respectively. It is recommended that the target system reliability indexes of main girder are 3.0 for the I and II safety levels hydraulic gates, and 2.0 for the III safety level hydraulic gates.
