000004620 520__ $$2eng$$aIt has been known that even after buckling, rectangular metallic plates supported along all the four edges are able to exert considerable postbuckling strength depending upon slenderness ratios. This reserved strength has been used in designs of thin aluminum structures (AA 1994) and cold-formed steel members (AISI 1996 and AISC 1993) for many years. However, the AASHTO has never used the postbuckling stength in the design of compression plate elements of steel bridges such as compression bottom flanges of open-top steel box girders in negative moment zone. In this study, the postbuckling capabilities of stiffened and unstiffened steel compression plates were investigated through geometric and material nonlinear finite element analysis. Also, an experimental investigation was carried out in order to evaluate the actual bending strength of open-top steel box girders subjected to negative moment.
