In this paper, the hybrid system is the combination of viscoelastic passive damper and hydraulic actuator. The magnetorheological (MR) damper, which is one of the semi-active control systems using controllable MR fluids as a damping device, is evaluated here. An intelligent control strategy is developed for the hybrid control system in which working status is divided in three different stages. The control system is passive for the small and moderate earthquakes; the active control begins to operate when structural response exceeds a given threshold value and the active system will be adjusted if the response will also exceed the other threshold value. In such a way, the passive and active working condition can be divided so that the external energy could be minimized according to the required response. When comparing the hybrid system with the MR system, both are installed on the same brace-structure system subjected to three different earthquake excitations. By setting the same top floor displacement reduction, the structural response of acceleration, displacement, and column shear is compared and evaluated. The MR controlled floor acceleration has exhibited some impulse-like increase caused by thrust-like MR force at the instance of the MR voltage modification that may affect the performance of the acceleration-sensitive-equipment on the floor.
